Numerous Women Experience Problems with Essure Permanent Contraceptive
According to an article published by Fox6Now, a countless number of women are suffering injuries and pain after using a permanent contraceptive product called Essure. According to Essure’s manufacturer, two flexible metal coils are inserted into a woman’s fallopian tubes. As a result, these metal coils are supposed to create a barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the eggs.
In many cases, women are forced to undergo surgical procedures in order to have the product removed. One woman who opted in for Essure states that her doctor explained that the product served as an alternative to tubal litigation. The doctor explained that the procedure could be done in the office and required no surgery.
Unfortunately, this was not the case for this particular patient. The report states that the woman’s procedure lasted about two hours due to complications while implanting the coils. The woman’s side effects, much like the side effects other women experienced after undergoing such procedures, included some of the following:
- Pelvic and back pain
- High blood pressure
- Severe anxiety
- Fatigue and exhaustion
Another woman who underwent the same procedure experienced heavy bleeding and relentless cramping for six weeks. After two weeks, the woman’s surgeon performed a hysterectomy. The woman was 28 years old at the time.
How the United States Food and Drug Administration is Handling Matters
Reports state that after receiving over 7,000 reports of adverse reactions, including unintended pregnancy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration held a hearing in order to review the Essure implant. In February, the FDA stated they would require a patient decision checklist and warning label. Additionally, they ordered Bayer, the parent company of the product, to conduct a study to obtain more information about the benefits of and risks of such product. However, the FDA failed to remove the product from the market.
In June 2016, a congressman introduced a bill to eliminate a litigation roadblock that has shielded Essure. If the bill is passed and becomes a law, it will be considered retroactive to 1976. However, the statute of limitations may still apply at the state level.
