Schneider Hammers Looks into Possible Invokana Cases after FDA Issued Warning in May
Invokana is a relatively new drug to hit the market. It was introduced in 2013 and created to prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high. It assists kidney functions, filtering out sugar and letting the body dispose of it through urine. It is a sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor; studies have shown these medications may make the blood more acidic. Patients may have developed a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, ketosis, or ketoacidosis.
The FDA Adverse Event Report System found at least 20 cases discovered from March 2013 until June 2014, where type-2 diabetes patients developed some form of ketoacidosis. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, confusion, fatigue, difficulty breathing, and sleepiness.
The FDA just issued this past May that the side effects of Invokana, in response to the patients who had developed ketoacidosis, had long been known, even prior to the drug’s release. More than 10,000 clinical trials had also been conducted though it could not be determined whether or not Invokana was beneficial to diabetes patients over the long-term.
Some of these effects include:
- Kidney stones
- Kidney failure
- Urinary tract infections
- Extreme weight loss
- Renal failure
- Fluid loss
Schneider Hammers is currently investigating Invokana cases to determine whether or not the drug has been linked to ketoacidosis and other side effects and to assist victims who believe they may have been harmed.
