INFUSE® Bone Graft Complications
OBTAIN COUNSEL FROM AN ATLANTA PRODUCT LIABILITY LAWYER
Bone grafts are performed when a patient needs to have diseased or damaged bone replaced. Medtronic, one of the manufacturers of the INFUSE® Bone Graft medical device, has been found responsible for causing some side effects, some of which can even be life-threatening.
Some of these side effects that have been reported include:
- Difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing
- Pain in the spinal nerves
- Displacement of the implant
- Degeneration of bone tissue
- Unusual bone formation in the spine
- Male sterility
Medtronic has long been marketing this product as a better, more efficient alternative to traditional bone graft surgery. The reports have shown that the incidence of complication has nearly 10 to 50% higher, according to one published study in 2011.

How does the INFUSE® Bone Graft work?
INFUSE® Bone Graft is made up of synthetic proteins that are supposed to simulate the formation of bones. This type of technology has been continuously researched for several years. However, in 2008, the FDA issued a Public Health Notification that complications may arise when using INFUSE® for spinal fusion. Doctors working with Medtronic were beginning to promote the usage of “off-label” procedures—in other words—procedures that were not recommended or approved.
The complications that stem from off-label procedures, from so-called trusted Medtronic-affiliated doctors, are the largest reason behind the several lawsuits. Alleging deceptive and secretive marketing strategies, the plaintiffs in these cases are now forced to deal with the pain and suffering from these procedures.
