KIDNEY OR HEART DAMAGE? CALL (770) 884-4626 FOR A FREE CONSULTATION!

Schneider Hammers is currently assisting individuals and families who believe they may have been harmed by Invokana, a medication used to treat Type II diabetes. Consumers have reported side effects that include kidney failure, stroke, and heart attack from using this drug. The most serious side effect associated with Invokana is ketoacidosis, which has led to hospitalization and even death.

Ketoacidosis occurs when the body produces ketones, which are acids that can lower the blood’s pH level, making it more acidic. It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar.

How Does Invokana Work?

Invokana became publicly available to consumers and patients in March 2013. The drug was advertised as a form of treatment for Type-2 diabetes that was different from previous generations of diabetes drug medications. Created and manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Invokana works with the kidneys to reduce glucose levels in the blood.

FDA Warnings

In May 2015, the FDA issued a warning about sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor drugs, such as Invokana. The SLGT2 inhibitor allows the glucose to reabsorb into the blood by using the kidneys and then flushes out any glucose that is not needed. Invokana works differently from older forms of diabetes drugs because it was marketed as a diabetes drug that will not cause weight gain or lead to hypoglycemia. However, the rise in acid levels in the blood due to the development of ketoacidosis has caused some alarm among the general public.

Later, in December of 2015, the FDA issued a revised warning linking Invokana and similar types of drugs to an increased risk of ketoacidosis and serious urinary tract infections, which could result in kidney damage or failure. Between March 2013 and May 2015, the FDA discovered 73 cases of ketoacidosis in patients taking an SGLT2 drug, as well as 19 cases of serious blood and kidney infections. The FDA advises that patients exhibiting any of the symptoms described above immediately discontinue use of the drug and seek medical attention.
